FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN – “Keep Haymee at Berklee”

I have been awarded a Scholarship to The Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, to study jazz piano. This is one of the largest and most prestigious contemporary music colleges in the world. I began studies on 12th September 2011. Click image to enlarge…

It’s expensive to be here (see spreadsheet) – the total cost of attendance for the 9 months (2 semesters) is 32 thousand pounds! I saved enough money to pay for my ticket to the USA, and received two bursaries: Arts Trust for Scotland Martyn Bennett Travel Bursary and a Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust award – totalling 11% of total cost of attendance. I received a good Berklee scholarship that pays for half of the fees – totalling 28% of total cost of attendance.  I have a loan that has covered living costs and fees for semester 1, and through WeFund online fundraising platform I raised enough money to pay for semester 2 living costs (over 12% of the total cost). There are still the remaining fees to pay for Semester 2, and the semester loan to repay.  I would be very grateful indeed if any of you would be willing to contribute in any way towards the total cost.  If you are interested in contributing please email me at hamishnapier @ mac . com

Many thanks, Hamish

We Funded!

I am absolutely delighted about reaching my WEFUND target. Thank you to all those who pledged, donated, spread the word, blogged, posted, sent links, chatted about it, told folk about it, created raffle prizes for it, played music for it and generally helped me out! I am extremely grateful, and WeFund will be sending me a list of all who pledged in a few days time. Pledgers, I will be in contact with you very soon to give you your prizes!!! Many many thanks! This will go towards my living costs while studying here at the Berklee College of Music for semester 2 (January-May 2012).

“Haymee’s Wee Fund” – Comp. Hamish Napier & Anna Massie

I wrote the A part and Anna wrote the B part. Great fun times teaching at Tinto Summer School last week! The title refers to the huge amounts of money I have to raise to keep me at Berklee for more than one semester! Haymee is one of my nicknames!

Classic Monk!

This is a hilarious video of jazz composition legend Thelonious Monk playing on the tele back in the day. Look at the expression on onlooker Count Basie’s face as Monk goes for another bizarre but beautiful solo. Ha! I love all this craic! And the presenter is a strange sort of chap eh? What is he smoking?…

“David” – String Quintet

I am part of Scottish composition organisation ‘Distil‘, and was given the opportunity to write a piece for the Distil Showcase 5 at The Tolbooth arts centre in Stirling in November.  I wrote it for String Quintet, and it was performed by the fantastic ‘Mr. McFall’s Chamber’ and musically directed by ace UK composer Sally Beamish. Thank you so much to Dave Francis, David McGuinness and Simon Thoumire at Distil for this fantastic opportunity.  The Showcase concert, and indeed recordings and videos of it, represent very much a ‘work in progress’ of the pieces involved. I hope to develop my piece even further this year.

The piece is called “David”, n honour of a family friend David Ince, and is in 3 movements. You’ll find more info about the piece in the video above.

Alternatively, you can listen to the audio of “David” below.

1st Movement: “David”

2nd Movement: “Dreams”

3rd Movement: “Glen Uig”

Here is Simon Thoumire’s promo video for the event. I’ll also explain a little about what Distil is in case you don’t know: I attended the Scottish Arts Council’s ‘Distil’ composition workshop in April 2007.  The course/retreat/workshops provides young professional folk-musicians with the opportunity to expand their musical horizons through collaboration with peers and experts from a variety of genres.  The year I attended Distil, we had Simon Fell, David McGuinness and Chris Wood as the three ‘specialists’ – together providing us with an insight into numerous intriguing areas of the musical spectrum including free improvisation, jazz, classical music, early Scottish piano music, intonation as a form of expression in music and English folk song culture.   Distil provides a platform for original works to be premiered – the annual ‘Distil Showcase’.

Hamish Napier Quintet

The lads and I have been very busy with other projects recently but we managed to make a demo in April and perform for the Glasgow Jazz Festival launch in June. We also had the honour of playing several gigs at Glasgow City Chambers including the Freedom of the City Ceremony for Billy Connolly in the Autumn. We have had band photos taken as well (by Natalie Champa Jennings) in the Chambers and you can now find us on Facebook and My Space. Check out the ‘My Music‘ page above for audio and videos of the band at Glasgow’s West End Festival.

Looking forward to our upcoming gig at Glasgow’s fabulous Celtic Connections Festival on Saturday 29th January at 8pm in the Recital Room, City Halls. There’s going to a few guests appearing with us too! Hope to see you there.

All the best, Hamish

Great Photographer

Hey all, Glasgow-based photographer Ande Murdoch has been at two different gigs I’ve played at recently and on both occasions has taken some lovey snaps. Check out his great site at www.andephotographic.co.uk. This evening he was at our Simon Moran Trio gig in Paisley and was also at the Commonwealth Games Flag Handover Event at Glasgow’s Fruitmarket a fortnight ago when I was playing with my own trio.
